Get started
There is a lot of pressure on school students to figure out what they want to do after they finish school. We at Skill Hire understand how daunting the whole process can be. That is why our team works with individuals to provide a personalised approach to career development.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to starting an apprenticeship or traineeship as there are over 500 occupations across a range of industries to choose from. They are also available in a variety of qualification levels so, you have the flexibility of training at your own pace. Having so many options available to you can be both good and bad but once you figure out what you want to do, everything will fall into place with due time.
Here’s your guide to starting an apprenticeship or traineeship in 4 easy steps:
Step 1 – Explore career options
Before embarking on a career path, it is important to figure out what interests you and which industry you would like to get into. This will enable you to decide whether an apprenticeship or traineeship is the right option for your chosen career. If you are not sure what the difference is between an apprenticeship or traineeship, read our Apprenticeships and Traineeships page before reading the rest of the steps below.
Before you commence an apprenticeship or traineeship, you will need to create a resume that not only contains your contact details but also any previous work experience, skills and achievements. Be mindful of how you construct your resume because it will be your tool to make a first impression.
If you are still in school, you can talk to a VET coordinator or speak to one of our career consultants at 9376 2800 to get advice on how to commence an apprenticeship or traineeship.
Step 2 – Meet our career consultants
Get in touch with us and send through your resume. This is where we will learn about what you are interested in and how we can help. If you get called in for an interview, our career consultants will discuss the next steps to achieving your career goals.
Choosing a career path is a big decision and it shouldn’t be made without understanding it completely. That’s why we organise for you to receive real work experience. As part of our services, we will be able to get you on site and get a taste of what working life will be like in your chosen specialisation. If you decide it is not for you, you can try your hand at another trade until you find the right one for you.
Step 3 – Find an employer
After you decide to become an apprentice, you will need to find an employer to take you on. This is probably the hardest part of the process. If you are still in school, consider undertaking a pre-apprenticeship which will give you an edge when it comes to starting an apprenticeship. For more information on pre-apprenticeships, please visit our Pre-Apprenticeships page. A pre-apprenticeship will not only give you a head start but also help you to establish industry contacts who may be able to help you with employment opportunities in the future.
To find an employer for your school-based apprenticeship or regular apprenticeship, there are a number of ways but these are good starting points:
- Looking at job search websites or newspapers
- Directly contact employers in your chosen industry to find out if they have any vacancies
- Ask your friends, family or members in your community if they know of any available opportunities
Step 4 – Find a training provider
Skill Hire is not only a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) but also a Group Training Organisation (GTO). As a GTO, we employ apprentices and trainees under a training contract and place them with host employers for completion of an apprenticeship or traineeship. You may be placed with one or more host employers. This is an excellent way to gain exposure to different workplaces or different jobs within your chosen industry. For instance, you may be rotated around different jobs in one big host organisation such as Rio Tinto or you may be rotated around several small businesses.
As part of your apprenticeship or traineeship, you may undertake the following:
- Off-job – you are paid to attend training at a training facility
- On-job – your training provider will deliver training at your worksite
- A combination of off-job and on-job
