6 steps to apply for a School-based Traineeship in Perth
Step 1 Submit an application form for your chosen school-based apprenticeship or traineeship with Skill Hire along with your resume and a cover letter. This is your opportunity to highlight your achievements, skills and express your interest in joining the program.
Step 2 You will then be called in for a face-to-face interview with a Skill Hire representative, parent/guardian, and a school representative. During this interview, you will be assessed on your work readiness, pre-existing commitments to school, your academic performance, school attendance, attitude, and capabilities.
Tip: We encourage you to do some research on the industry you are interested in working because you will be assessed on your industry knowledge and commitment to an apprenticeship or traineeship.
Step 3 Successful students will then undertake 1 week of work experience. This is a trial period for both you and your host employer to ensure this is the right fit. The week of work experience will give you hands-on experience and insight into what it is like working in your choice of industry.
Step 4 Upon successful completion of your work experience, you will be offered a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship if you wish to go ahead with the program.
Step 5 Under this program, you will undertake 1 day of paid employment every week (minimum 7.5 hours) and attend school during the remaining 4 days of the week. Through your school-based apprenticeship or traineeship you will be able to undertake a Nationally Recognised Qualification (Certificate II or II) with TAFE or a RTO which will ultimately contribute towards your Western Australian Certification of Education (WACE).
Step 6 Skill Hire will provide ongoing support, mentoring and assistance to you during your apprenticeship or traineeship in a number of ways to ensure that you are progressing through your program successfully.
